The final piece of music at Sunday’s concert was Rachmaninoff’s Piano Concerto No. 2. Pianist Horacio Gutiérrez appeared to be a master of illusion. His hands appeared to be hovering above the keys as he played the daunting solo part.
There were a few moments when pianist and conductor were at odds on the tempo but the second movement was a revelation. This could be the most romantic section of any piano concerto written and it came off beautifully.
The orchestra was balanced and allowed the lyricism of the solo piano to bloom.
Throughout, Horacio Gutiérrez mesmerized the audience. There were moments when it didn’t seem as if he were playing but the piano continued to sing.
The Rachmaninoff Two was a gorgeous end to a beautiful season of music at Copley Symphony Hall.
