Peter Sprague / Leonard Patton @ 98 Bottles, May 25

Two of San Diego's finest musicians team up on Friday night, May 25, for a concert at 98 Bottles. Local guitar king Peter Sprague joins the soulful vocalist Leonard Patton for an intimate series of duets.

Patton and Sprague go back a long ways. I first saw them perform more than twenty years ago in Sprague's now-dormant group, Pass The Drum at Elario's in La Jolla.

Patton also played a major role in Sprague's latest release as a leader, the all-vocals album Calling Me Home.

The singer's main gig for the last three years has been as a cast-member in the long-running play miXtape at the Horton Grand in the Gaslamp District.

Sprague and Patton have a special chemistry brewing, and they can take material from the Beatles, or Bossa Nova standards and go places you'd never imagine with them. The guitarist seems to take delight at the opportunity to explore with Patton.

"Those who know, know that this dude brings it beautifully night after night. He's one of my favorite's," says Sprague. "Last week, we rehearsed and learned some new tunes including a wild version of Hendrix's 'Castles Made of Sand,' gone jazz!"

I've seen these two bend the Lennon/McCartney classic "With a Little Help From My Friends," into a totally new form, and they can also interact on the level of the Chick Corea / Bobby McFerrin duets. Patton has an internal hard-drive full of instrumental samples resembling muted-trumpets and chest-thump boom-box beats.

Around Patton's pliant tenor, Sprague weaves orchestral backgrounds and sensual counterpoint.

Show starts at 8 p.m.
