My man Morrissey is one sick son of a gun. At his birthday concert he showed the Meet Your Meat video as a backdrop for Smiths-classic "Meat Is Murder." As a long time vegan, I never needed to see footage of animal mutilation and slaughter. The animals were not simply treated as commodities but as objects of contempt by psychopathic workers. I felt like hurling the vegan burrito I ate earlier, while audience members around me seemed unfazed. Many came to the show to text, but still felt jubilant enough to sing along to Smiths classics such as "Please, Please, Please, Let Me Get What I Want."
The band, decked out in "SeaWorld Sucks" T-shirts (and guitarist Boz Boorer in drag) sounded tight, but many of the same songs were played in 2009 at a classier venue, Copley Symphony Hall, in an evening that, to me, was more fun, less nightmare.
