Amazed: "It's about three friends who are always getting into some kind of mystery and going on adventures to solve them. But what it boils down to," show creator Richard Allen says, "is friendship."
New episodes stream every Wednesday on www.amazedtv.com, YouTube, and Blip TV.
Allen calls from East Lake in Chula Vista where he has been working on another installment of the web show. The cawing of crows in the background is voluminous, as if on the set of an Alfred Hitchcock movie. Fitting; the production team has fashioned Coronado, otherwise known for glittering beaches and a five-star hotel into a spooky and mysterious island adventure zone.
Coronado locations have included businesses such as the MJ Boutique and Café 1134. "That's been our base of operations. They've been very good to us. They let us take over." Allen says they plan to film at the Coronado police station in coming weeks.
"When you shoot for web TV there isn't always a budget. I've been amazed at how friendly businesses have been to us. We've had to beg, borrow, and steal for locations, and everyone we have approached has been friendly and supportive." City Deli in Hillcrest is another such shooting location. "We take over every Sunday. We're completely in the way, but they're okay with us being there."
Allen is a filmmaker by trade. "My first full-length feature film is in post production, and we have ideas for other television shows in development." His production crew is a mix of locals and film and sound techs from Los Angeles. There are 15 more episodes of Amazed to come. So, what happens in the end?
"I'd have to kill you if I told you."
Amazed stars a 15-year-old pop singer from Santee named Dylan Hyde. The other two actors, also locals, are Harley Henderson and Disa Power.
"I came up with the concept behind Amazed," says Allen, who grew up on Coronado and is a partner in the Allen and Gray Music Group.
"Dylan Hyde is a singer. He's also an actor. We wanted to create a vehicle that would give him some exposure. And, we wanted to include some great San Diego landmarks." One such landmark is the Victorian-era Long-Waterman house on First Avenue in Banker's Hill. In fact, he says, "That place was pretty much the inspiration for this."
The Long-Waterman House was built in 1889 by John Long, who sold the house in 1891 to Robert Waterman, the seventeenth governor of California, after the untimely death of Mrs. Long. The Queen Ann-style Victorian is a national historic landmark.
“I practically grew up in the Long-Waterman House. My grandparents are friends with the owners,” says Dylan Hyde. “My favorite room has always been the attic. There is a widow’s peak with a balcony. The best view of San Diego!”
Hyde describes himself as a crooner. "I don't know if I agree with rap. I prefer family music. Pop. That's what I usually do. We call it classy pop." Allen's Chrissy Field Records signed him in December.
"I was doing a show in Temecula," says Hyde, "musical theater. Ricky [Richard Allen] came to see the show." Was Hyde available to shoot a pilot called Second Star Studio? He was. This led to the recording of a duet for the soundtrack, which then led to Hyde recording an entire solo album for Chrissy Field . "Love Is" was released on iTunes as his first single.
Does Hyde have his sights set on becoming the next Justin Bieber? "I would love that. That's definitely what I'm pushing for."
