Local imprint Elk Beats dropped a new release today from label co-founder and acetate dubplate jockey Donnie ‘EshOne’ Valdez.
The double single, "Allergies" & "Reflective Wallpaper” ($2 download at elkbeats.com), is the label’s fifth release to date and sees a continuation of EshOne’s ever-evolving rootsy, minimalist dubstep.
"Elk Beats intends to maintain a pure flow of energy from the label and its supporters,” writes Valdez. “Without diluting this exchange with unnecessary distribution costs and hassles, Elk Beats can direct all of the proceeds from each sale towards the development of the label's main initiative: the self-distributed vinyl production of limited Elk releases."
The release is part of an effort to fund the label’s debut vinyl compilation featuring EshOne alongside label co-founder Misk, the enigmatic MidiVan, and Boston junglist gone dub-elk newcomer AxH (née Prodigal Son).
“Misk has been making this weird, slower tempo music with juke and glitch influence," Vadelz says. "But it’s not juke or glitch. I don’t really know how to classify it. I’ve been making moombahton, but it doesn’t sound like anything else either, so I don’t know what to call it. AxH is making dubstep with jungle influence and really fast breaks. We’re just keeping it as weird as possible and staying true to dark bass roots.”
Forthcoming Elk Beats releases include AxH’s double single "Gather Souls" & "Mudded" on May 28 and an EP from EshOne’s alter-ego, Don Valdez.
Valdez’s pending Burqueño EP features 7 original compositions in 108 BPM moombahton and his unique brand of 140 BPM "Tijuana bass."
The sound is a juxtaposition of San Diego’s dubstep influence and the Latin rhythms from his hometown of Albuquerque, New Mexico, where he has been living intermittently for the past nine months or so.
Catch EshOne live at LA’s legendary SMOG dubstep night on June 17 with Japan's Goth-Trad.
