Hitting It Three Nights in a Row

I’m looking at three concerts for this weekend. All three have smart and well-balanced programs.

Friday Night: San Diego Symphony is going all out for rhapsodies. There are four pieces on the program. Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue and Rachmaninoff’s Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini might be the most popular rhapsodies around — except for Bohemian Rhapsody. Keeping us on our toes are national rhapsodies by Enesco and Alfven. The rhapsodies are Romanian and Swedish.

Saturday Night: The La Jolla Symphony is giving it up for spring with spring themed compositions by Grieg, Schumann, and Britten. Joining the La Jolla Symphony are young and exciting soloist Kerrie Caldwell and Sasha Hashemipour. Kerrie was a music geek/student at Grossmont College before finishing her vocal studies at the Cincinnati Conservatory. Sasha went to Rancho Bernardo High School and has been studying voice at the prestigious Academy of Vocal Arts in Philadelphia.

Sunday Night: The Palomar Symphony Orchestra is performing at the Poway Performing Arts Center. The program features Beethoven’s Emperor Concerto with soloist Peter Gach, along with Prokofiev’s Classical Symphony and Walton’s Coronation March.
