BRIM: Eve Beglarian and Mary Rowell @ Space 4 Art, May 10

Fresh Sound concert curator Bonnie Wright's next installment in her monthly series will feature BRIM: Eve Beglarian and Mary Rowell, on Thursday, May 10 at Space 4 Art, 8 p.m.

This continues the series focus on musicians Wright observed, and was inspired by during her recent six month musical sojourn in New York City.

Beglarian is a composer who recently took a four-month kayak and bicycle trip down the Mississippi River, gathering the source material for this concert: "BRIM: Songs From The River Project." She kept an assortment of electronics with her and made a photo, text and sound blog, interacting with friends and fans who followed her travels.

Beglarian has been referred to as "One of new music's truly free spirits," and a "remarkable experimentalist."

She will be accompanied by the multi-instrumentalist Rowell, who plays guitar, violin and mandolin. Beglarian will narrate and Rowell also handles vocals.

Rowell, a graduate of the Julliard School, is currently concertmaster of both the Radio City Music Hall Orchestra and the Palm Beach Pops.

Wright's first two concerts for Fresh Sounds at Space 4 Arts were substantial artistic successes, with excellent audience attendance as well.

I'm expecting the unexpected. I didn't know much about Ben Goldberg, the clarinetist who kicked off the series in a trio with Chicago Underground guitarist Jeff Parker and NYC drum phenomenon Ches Smith, and that one turned out to be a candidate for concert of the year.

I knew even less about classical guitarist James Moore, who's solo performance featured knockout 20th Century works by everyone from John Zorn to Lou Harrison--yet I was riveted from start to finish.

I'm betting that this concert will leave me amazed as well.

Space 4 Art is located at 325 15th St., between "J" and "K". There is free parking nearby as well as $3 lots. Tickets are $15, $10 for students with ID.
