San Diego's most cutting edge music curator Bonnie Wright is at it again, poised to present the next installment of her experimental series Fresh Sound at Space 4 Art, on Monday, April 9, at 8 pm with a solo performance by fretted multi-instrumentalist James Moore.
Bonnie's Spring series aims to focus on some of the musicians she became aware of when she was on her six-month reconnaissance mission to explore new music in New York City last year.
"I saw James Moore several times while I was in New York, and he was really, really interesting. I saw him with the Dither Quartet, and was so impressed I put their CD out on my record label. I also saw him performing on the electric banjo, and electric guitar in very creative situations, so I thought, 'I've got to get this guy out here', and, because he's already coming to California, I was able to do it," said Wright, from her home in Mission Hills.
Moore will be performing a solo program on the National Resonator guitar (aka Dobro), of pieces by composers Lou Harrison, premieres by Molly Thompson and Larry Polansky, and selections from avant garde icon John Zorn's "Book Of Heads."
I'm not too familiar with Moore's work, but I did check out the Dither Quartet disc on Bonnie's label, and it's some pretty amazing stuff.
More than anything, I can recommend this concert, because in 20 years of attending Bonnie Wright productions, I've never been disappointed. When it comes to events curated by Wright, my only regrets stem from the concerts I've missed over the years. I haven't been bored, or left early once.
Moore has worked with turntable-ist Christian Marclay and guitarist Elliott Sharp, as well as the Bang On A Can ensemble, where he directed an orchestra of hearing-deprived guitarists. He's been involved with Fred Frith's music for multiple table-top guitars, and his other projects include the folk-noise group Oliphant, the experimental band Passenger Fish and the "extreme chamber music project," Ensemble de Sade.
Space 4 Art is located at 325 15th St. between J and K. Tickets are $15 general admission, $10 students.
