KSDS Jazz 88 Jazz Live monthly concert series continues on Tuesday, March 13, with LA vocalist Judy Wexler and her quartet.
Wexler has been getting a lot of positive press lately from Jazz Times, who called her, "one of the most focused, unpretentious, no-nonsense singers around," and NPR's Susan Stamberg who proclaimed, "Judy Wexler can sing almost anything."
Wexler studied theater and classical piano at UC Santa Cruz and has guest starred in episodes of the sit-com Frasier.
She got the jazz bug when she was living in San Francisco, just up the hill from the world famous Keystone Corner nightclub. After years of study and dues-paying, Wexler went on to headline at clubs like the Blue Note and Feinstein's in New York, Jazz Alley in Seattle, and Catalina's in LA.
Her second album, Dreams & Shadows, debuted at #2 on the national JazzWeek charts. She's got a new release on the Jazzed Media label, called Under A Painted Sky featuring the arrangements of Alan Pasqua.
Wexler possesses a remarkably resonant and supple alto, dead-center pitch, and can use the vocalese technique to great effect, which she does on the jazz classic "Pent Up House" from her latest record.
She will be joined by a solid group of veteran improvisers. Jeff Colella on piano, performed with, and conducted for Lou Rawls for 15 years. He has also worked and/or recorded with vocalist Diane Schurr, trumpeter Bobby Shew and vocal legend Sheila Jordan.
New Jersey native bassist Chris Colangelo now resides in LA, and has worked with Yusef Lateef, as well as ex-Weather Report drummers Alex Acuna and Peter Erskine.
Drummer Steve Haas moved to NYC to join the Ravi Coltrane Group. Since coming to Los Angeles, he has spent significant time the vocal super-group The Manhattan Transfer, and was asked to join guitarist John Scofield's group.
Those are some credentials.
Tickets are free to Jazz 88 members and a measly $10 to the general public. Concert begins at 8 pm.
