"Daniel has been planning this show since the beginning of the year, a performance with some musicians with which he has a special connection — we just weren't sure where we would hold it," says Dizzy's operator Chuck Perrin.
He's referring to Daniel Jackson, tenor saxophonist/pianist and true San Diego jazz icon. Jackson has been active in the local scene long enough to remember when there were more than a dozen venues to hear the music on a regular basis.
Jackson has worked, recorded, and or, toured with Ray Charles, L.A. drum legend Lenny McBrowne, trumpeter Freddie Hubbard, and Latin giant Willie Bobo, to name a few.
He's got a deep personal sound that reminds me of the spiritual, lyrical side of John Coltrane.
Perrin has found a new venue to host this concert, McCrea Music Company in La Mesa. "Mr. McCrea has been a fan of Daniel for a long time — and it seemed like a natural spot — because McCrea's is a neighborhood, family music store and Daniel has a special connection to supporting and mentoring young musicians."
Jackson's San Diego gigs are always special events. This one figures to be even more so given the line-up of musicians. Several heavyweight L.A. players will be featured — Henry Franklin on bass, Charles Owens, on saxophones, Jacques Lesure on guitar, and local masters Chuck McPherson on drums with Mikan Zlatkovich on piano.
Vocalist Dorothy Annette and special, surprise guests will also be accompanying Jackson.
As if that weren't enough, Jackson will also be hosting a free all-ages-welcome jazz workshop from 5-7 p.m.
Perrin is excited about the possibilities, "The room itself reminds me a lot of the original Dizzy's, with an arched high wood-beamed ceiling. It has a full stage, and I think the music will sound glorious in there. We are hoping to accommodate 120+ people."
This is going to be a must-see event.
McCrea Music Company is located at 8361 Allison Ave, in La Mesa, right off of La Mesa Blvd. behind the new Gingham Restaurant. Tickets are $15. The concert begins at 8 p.m.
