Reaching the point to where a band has completely exhausted itself occurs often these days with perpetual touring and publicity stunts. However, age may be an advantage for the foursome from West Palm Beach.
These Floridians named Surfer Blood have been on a constant go since they released their popular guitar-driven hit "Swim" in 2009. The young members of Surfer Blood (which used to call itself Jabroni Sandwich, by the way) continued on their musical journey with a stop on UCSD campus to performed an hour-long set at Porter's Pub, which included a catchy new Pixies-esque tune called "Miranda."
At first look, leader singer John Paul Pitts appears just of the legal drinking age; however, this is what works to their advantage. Pitts's voice is pleasantly unexpected in that he sounds as if he could front a synthesizer-based '80s band. Which is impressive, as Surfer Blood's music seems most influenced by '60s radio rock 'n' roll a la the Beach Boys.
But Pitts and company pull it off, and the UCSD crowd took notice more so during the funky/poppy track "Take It Easy‚" which proved you are never too old to crowd surf.
Concert: Surfer Blood
Date: February 21
Venue: Porter's Pub UCSD Campus
Seats: General
