Jeffery Smith, the Managing Artistic Director for the Liberty Theatre At Paradise Village will be presenting trombonist Dave Scott & The New Slide Quartet on March 18, as a part of their ongoing Sunday jazz concert series.
Scott is the Meteorologist for local TV station KUSI.
Music, however, has always been the affable weatherman's raison d' etre. Growing up in Hawaii, he studied the instrument, and with his savings from a paper route, bought his first trombone from Louis Armstrong band mate Trummy Young at the age of 13.
"At 15, I won a scholarship to study with the Honolulu Symphony Orchestra. I bought all the Urbie Green and Bill Watrous records I could find. Bill is now one of my best friends in the world and I've been lucky enough to do concerts with him in recent years," said Scott via e-mail
"So, originally, my heart was in music and I studied to be a jazz musician. But, as you know, jazz is tough to make a living at. So, it was for economic reasons that I eventually found myself as a meteorologist."
Scott works with some of the finest of San Diego jazz cats, in several different groups, with regular gigs at Croce's in the Gaslamp, and Clay's in La Jolla.
The New Slide Quartet features Latin music piano virtuoso Irving Flores (who also gigs with Gilbert Castellanos), and the rhythm section from Fattburger-- drummer Kevin Koch and bassist Mark Hunter.
Flores has been the musical director for Latin superstars Celia Cruz and Armando Manzanero, as well as other high profile gigs. Hunter and Koch are two guys I've been watching for thirty years, back when Koch was a member of Peter Sprague's Dance Of The Universe, and Hunter was holding it down for the Bruce Cameron / Hollis Gentry Quartet. Both were recently handpicked by legendary composer Burt Bacharach to play at his Old Globe production, "Some Lovers."
Scott will also be singing a few numbers, an ability he acquired, though coercion, while gigging with the San Diego jazz pioneer Fro Brigham's band. "One night, he told the audience, we have a surprise for you. He then had me get up and sing one. I knew the words to 'On A Clear Day', so we did that. It seemed so natural and the crowd response was so positive and enthusiastic that I've kept it up," said Scott.
What can the audience expect for the Liberty Theatre concert?
"The music will be mostly originals I have written. Both vocals and instrumentals in a jazz, funk and Latin vein. Most people hear my music every day without knowing it. I wrote the theme to Good Morning San Diego, which is heard throughout the day on KUSI-TV."
The Liberty Theatre is located at 2700 4th St. in National City. Tickets are $15 general admission, $10 seniors, students and active military, and $ 5 for Paradise Village residents. The concert begins at 7 p.m.
