As we head into summer, classical music concerts become thin on the ground but there are some nice ones this weekend.
La Jolla Symphony concludes their celebration of Stravinsky with The Russian Composer. They will be performing Samuel Barber’s Piano Concerto and Stravinsky’s The Firebird. There are two performances: Saturday, June 9th at 7:30 pm and Sunday, June 10th at 2:00 pm. Both concerts are in Mandeville Auditorium at UCSD.
Also on Saturday, the Trio con Brio will be at the Carmel Valley Library. The trio is a band of sophomores from Canyon Crest Academy (high school). The "future of classical music" will perform pieces by Haydn, Prokofiev, Dvorak, Beethoven, Mendelssohn. The concert is at 1:00 pm.
At the First Unitarian Universalist Church of San Diego on Saturday there is a concert of a cantata based on the six principles of Unitarian Universalism. It sounds interesting. The concert is at 7:30 pm.
Sunday evening has a concert by the Westminster Choir at 1st Presbyterian downtown. Member of the San Diego Symphony will be joining the choir in music by Morten Lauridsen and Schubert’s Mass in G.
I think Schubert’s Mass in G is the perfect piece of music for this time of year in San Diego. Schubert’s music is fresh, melodic, and full of light.
