The San Diego Symphony concert in Balboa Park was once again a blast. The program of music was based on an Olympics theme and incorporated British music along with two Olympic compositions.
On this day, Balboa Park did throw up a few challenges to presenting a classical music concert outdoors.
The entire concert was covered with the residue of the Pride Festival as house music pumped its way over from an event at 6th and Laurel and covered any subtleties the orchestra attempted to create.
The only international flight that frequents San Diego, a behemoth British Airlines number, also lumbered by at an altitude of 50 feet — or so — for what seemed like an eternity.
That said, my kids could also run, scream, wrestle, "air-conduct", and do cartwheels while the orchestra thundered out Gustav Holsts' Jupiter: The Bringer of Jollity from The Planets.

The highlights of the concert were Jupiter, Olympic Fanfare which was composed by John Williams for the 1984 Los Angeles games, and Elgar's Pomp and Circumstance Marches No. 1.
I love this concert and I hope it continues in the years to come if only so I can share live classical music with them without any shushing.
