3rd Annual Rock-N-Roll Reunion Benefit Concert Slated for July 28

Anthony Carrasco lived in San Diego during the '80s. He, like a lot of teenagers, had aspirations to play rock and roll. "But I was kicked out of every band I've been in or auditioned for." He laughs. "I'm not that good." He satisfied his rock and roll lust by becoming a promoter, if only once a year.

In 2010, Carrasco hosted his first hard rock reunion concert in San Diego with a handful of his favorite bands. He called it the 80s Big Hair Rock Starz Reunion. He checks in by phone from Florida, where he now lives. He recalls that a good time was had by all. So much so, in fact, that he decided to do it again the following year.

But during the spring of 2011, something went horribly wrong in Carrasco's life. "I had a tragedy."

In May 2011 the Union Tribune reported that police had fatally shot a 26-year-old man after he lunged toward officers with a kitchen knife. The county Medical Examiner’s Office identified the man as Marc Anthony Carrasco. He was the son of Anthony Carrasco.

"His aunt had called the police on him. He lived there with her and his two baby girls. He was a single dad." After she called police, he says he's unsure about what really happened, but in the end, his son was dead. "They shot him six times in the chest." Carrassco stops, takes his own measure. "They said he came at them with a knife but none was ever produced at the trial." He breaks down for a long couple of minutes.

The show went on as planned in July, but this time around it was as a benefit gig for Carrasco's granddaughters. Now ages four and eight, they live in San Diego with their mother.

Carrasco turned 50 in June. He handles communications for a Florida law firm. His concert co-producer here is Brad Kirkbride, of El Cajon, drummer in the AC/DC tribute band Back 2 Black. This year, the event has been renamed the 3RD Annual Rock-N-Roll Reunion Benefit Concert and will feature an all San Diego lineup and includes Benedictum, Dive Bomber, Back 2 Black, VacScene, and special guest Ukulele Ray.

Saturday, July 28th, The Griffin Night Club (619) 684-1816
