Tonight is the opening concert at Tanglewood. What is Tanglewood? It is the summer home of the Boston Symphony and this is its 75th season. Tanglewood is probably the premiere music festival in the U.S.
The concert tonight is the same program that opened the festival 75 years ago. Superstar conductor, Christoph von Dohnanyi, leads the Bostonians in Beethoven's Leonore Overture No. 3 and Symphony No. 6: Pastoral.
Serge Koussevitzky created a summer program for music students two years after the inaugural festival. The program was designed for about 300 students and is now the Tanglewood Music Center.
The title Tanglewood was chosen because Hawthorne wrote his Tanglewood Tales in a nearby cottage.
The festival runs through September 2nd. The BSO website is offering a different and free classical stream through the end of the festival.
