Sam Lopez Keeps San Diego Strange

Having just curated the third annual San Diego Experimental Guitar Show at Soda Bar, promoter and noise musician Sam Lopez (aka Zsa Zsa Gabor) will continue to provide a forum for San Diego weirdlings with the monthly Stay Strange night.

“I've been curating shows at the Kava Gallery ever since my previous music collective, Trummerflora, went on hiatus,” says Lopez. “The Kava Gallery and Trummerflora had a great working relationship and I didn't want the shows to stop, so I basically have been booking shows there ever since. Stay Strange will reside at the Kava Gallery for the remainder of the year.”

Lopez bills Stay Strange as "A Night of Outsider Art & Music", but says that the name really applies to the audience.

“I'm suggesting that the audience stay strange, or keep their minds open. My first show commences February 12 with Monochromacy and Asha Sheshadri. Monochromacy plays heavy sheets of primitive electric guitar. Total music for the end times. Asha Sheshadri throws down these melancholic nightmarish melodies that soothe you. However, there's something unsettling between those syrupy notes."

Lopez says that 80% of Stay Strange performers are local, but he plans on bringing in artists from Los Angeles in the future.

"It's a great scene as the shows are all ages at that means my two-and-a-half year old son can attend. Also, there is tons of parking and the Kava Gallery is right on the trolley line. I hope to have an arts booth at each show with crafts from local artists.”
