Kevin Martin and Heavy Hawaii Release Parties

Tonight/January 28 at the Griffin (formerly O'Connell's), Kevin Martin is finally doing an official release party for his 10-track full-length Throwback Pop. "We only printed up a hundred new copies," says Martin.

"This is the physical CD. Throwback Pop was intended as a pure digital release." Previously, buyers had to download as MP3 320, FLAC, or "just about any other format you could possibly desire."

Endoxi will also be on the bill, along with Lee Coulter, 321 Stereo, and Josh Tatum. The show starts at 8:30pm.

Singer/keyboardist Kevin Martin is a member of Get Back Loretta, who won Best New Artist award at the 2005 San Diego Music Awards and the Best Pop award in 2006. At the 2007 awards they won for Best Pop and Best Pop Album for the record Over the Wall. They won Best Pop again in 2008, and in 2009 their record Where Did You Go won Best Pop Album.

Get Back Loretta’s manager is “Jocko” Marcellino, of ’60s greaser rock group Sha Na Na. It was Marcellino who got some of the band’s songs into the hands of former Nirvana drummer Dave Grohl.

After listening to GBL’s tunes and liking what he heard, the Foo Fighters’ front man and drummer for Them Crooked Vultures suggested the band play a showcase for Hollywood Records and RCA.

Martin released his solo album, Throwback Pop, in 2011. A video for his song “TV News” was shot during the October 2011 Occupy San Diego rallies downtown. The live footage was captured by photographer Steven Brannen using a hand-held camera.

The finished video, which was posted to YouTube the same day, incorporates the studio version of the song with footage of the NYC Occupy Wall Street protests.

“There are many sides of Endoxi,” says singer-guitarist Chris Wilson. “There’s the Mozart got drunk on Metallica’s wine and flew to space on a rock ’n’ roll rocket ship side. Then there’s the 1940’s big-band Black Crowes meets Dave Matthews at Woodstock and lit Jimi Hendrix on fire side. Last, there’s the timeless Queen meets the late-era Beatles in Central Park for an anthemic acoustic piano-driven explosion side.”

The band was nominated for San Diego Music Awards in 2009 for Best Alternative Album and 2010 for Best Alternative Band. They were also Voted People’s Choice at the San Diego edition of Musicpalooza in 2009, as well as winning Best Rock Band and Artist of the Year at the Lifeswork Entertainment Music Awards.

They released the album New Blood, Old Soul in 2009. Their August 2010 album Earthbound (recorded at Studio West) came out with an all-age release party at the Epicentre on August 6 and a 21-up show at the Belly Up on August 28.

“The theme of the entire album,” says sax player Joe Cardillo, “is to find one’s purpose in life. While on the journey, you go through internal and external struggles, dealing with all the challenges and rewards that are part of that journey. This art and this album is about that journey.”

The group is rounded out by bassist Mike Chartrand, keyboardist John Varn, and drummer Matt Caskitt. They spent September 2011 touring Las Vegas, Scottsdale, Phoenix, Perris, Los Angeles, Santa Barbara, Fresno, Sacramento, Crockett, and San Francisco.

Also tonight, Heavy Hawaii will play a release party for their three-song 7-inch “Superbowl XXIX” (Art Fag Recordings) at M-Theory Music on Washington Street, beginning at 6 p.m.

The band was formed in 2009 by guitarist Matt Bahamas (née Barajas), who formerly played in Fantastic Magic with Indian instrumentalist Sundar Whalen and future Wavves frontman Nathan Williams (who played mandolin). Heavy Hawaii also includes keyboardist Aimee Sanchez (Black Mamba) and Mikey Peterson (Jungle Fever, the Natives).

A Valhalla High grad and college dropout, Bahamas cites “babes” as a major inspiration. Heavy Hawaii’s first song release, “Sleeping Bag,” appeared on the Bathetic Records compilation Summer Bummer (Get Laid, Get Wasted). Their song “Teen Angel” was the first single off their debut EP HH, released on Art Fag Records in late September 2010, the same year they were nominated Best New Artist at the San Diego Music Awards.

In early 2011, they embarked on a tour with popular groove songsmiths Dom, while Barajas began creating a planned 12-issue comic book series with Wavves frontman Nathan Williams called Negative Dad.

They toured again in August 2011. Around the same time, Aimee Sanchez (who also plays in Black Mamba) co-founded a new band with Derek Butler called Divers, featuring keyboard, bass, and processed drums.
