Combining the music of Michael Jackson with the choreography and pizzazz of Cirque du Soleil made for an electrifying performance at the Valley View Casino Center. The Immortal World Tour's program describes a "unique view into the spirit, passion, and heart of the artistic genius who forever transformed global pop culture." It was as close to a flashy Vegas show as San Diego will ever see.
The Immortal tour is reverential to the Gloved One's memory, screening several videos of Jackson throughout the years. The dancing was spectacular, as was the special effects. However, the music sounded canned, especially at first. The highlight of the show was when a live band performed with three backup singers.
The hits rolled from one into another. The Neverland Gates were the backdrop for "I'll Be There." "One More Chance" morphed into "ABC," while five Afro-wigged dancers shimmied. "Smooth Criminal" had a mob-infused flavor, and "Dangerous" brought out a female contortionist who sure knew her way around a dance pole. "Thriller" was full of the lurking undead, but my favorite had to be "Earth Song," Jackson's environmental paean.
