Music rehearsals for Moby Dick started last night for San Diego Opera. Usually it's not too difficult for me to hate contemporary "classical" music but in this case I have a tall order. To the contrary, I think I'm in love with Moby Dick.
Part of my amorous feelings could be from the fact that it's an all male chorus and I'm singing 1st tenor, aka, the melody. So this is what it feels like to be a soprano--those lazy song birds.
I'm looking forward to more rehearsal tonight. That isn't always the case.
The last show we did with an all male chorus was Rigoletto. I looked forward to those rehearsals as well but it was more about hanging out and making snarky comments about "middle" Verdi. Rigoletto is a great and famous opera but not so much for the chorus.
In Moby Dick, composer Jake Heggie has given the ship's crew--the chorus--music that is at times beautiful, exciting, interesting, and dramatic.
Heggie's music also appeals to me as a singer. At one point, the 1st tenors have an optional high C. The only other show I know of with a chorus-tenor high C is Lohengrin.
Moby Dick made a great first impression.
