Groovetube - Innerds, WITT, xbxrx, and HEALTH at the Che Cafe Benefit

The Ché Café threw a three day benefit festival over the weekend to raise money for a new insurance policy.

The event touted one of the best line ups I’ve seen at the venue in about a decade including notables such as No Age, HEALTH, xbxrx, Crystal Antlers, and Innerds.

When I arrived around 7 p.m. on Sunday, Upsilon Acrux was wrapping up their set and one of the benefit organizers told me that the venue had already surpassed their goal of $12,000.

Innerds made a mean stink on Mars with homemade effects and polydimensional beats:

Playing their first gig in over a year, former San Diego trio WITT (guitarist Jesse Kranzler, now living in New York, was the event’s primary organizer) didn’t miss a beat on their epic math rock adventure.

A cordial mosh pit broke loose to xbxrx and, possessed by nostalgia, I bobbled around the fray, reliving my adolescence with joyful abandon.

But time is the great equalizer, and, no longer the sprightly young buck I once was, I quickly destroyed my right shoe (mandal, actually) and, after going barefoot, slipped awkwardly on some spilt organic Blue Sky soda.

My left ankle made an exploding sound and my standing amongst the bipedal was pretty much done for the night.

Two days later, I still can’t walk and am tortured by the dismal significance of it all.

But so what? Here’s what that looked like.

Los Angeles noisicians HEALTH topped the night with raw synths, overdriven bass, dance friendly drums, and mad footwork.

All told, the event was a huge success. It’s been quite some time since I’ve seen such an energetic crowd in the Ché, which has a long history of booking some of the best all ages shows in San Diego.

With fewer all ages venue in town than ever right now, let’s hope the Ché’s current booking crew has been inspired to keep the newly insured venue’s legacy going.

The Ché Café was founded in 1980 as a “community space, DIY venue, vegan café, resource center for radical grassroots activists, and a whole lot more. We host all ages shows, serve tasty vegan food and host numerous political and social events.”

Now what can they do with Encinitas unstable cliffs?

Make the cliffs fall, put up more warnings, fine beachgoers?
