A couple years ago, my buddy and former bandmate Jesse Plack became bedridden with what doctors diagnosed as a rare and mysterious brain virus.
After several months of debilitating weakness, Jesse pulled up his linoleum flooring one afternoon to find a jungle of fungi growing beneath the house.
It rang true with his experience years earlier, when he’d had to transfer from our East County high school after suffering from perpetual fatigue due to mold in the walls.
Jesse's sensitivity to airborne spores ultimately led him to relocate from his Normal Heights home recording studio to Seattle, where building standards anticipate and deter the growth of mold and fungi.
A proficient multi-instrumentalist and prolific songwriter, Jesse is returning to San Diego this Sunday with a trio performing “a weird amalgamation of folk, electronic, and prog with a lot of goofiness and a little seriousness.”
Plack, Smith and Unicorn played their first gig four days ago before departing Seattle to tour down the West Coast.
“We’re a feel-good good time,” says Jesse. “We play fun music. Our slogan is: it’s ok to be good.”
The trio will be playing selections from Plack and Unicorn’s newest solo albums as well as some collaborative tracks.
Multi-instrumentalist Naomi Adele Smith also plays keys with Seattle folk rock band Autumn Electric, who will be sharing Sunday’s bill at the Ruby Room with the quirky three piece and local folk rock bandit The Flowerthief.
“We’re like Peter, Paul and Mary on ecstasy,” says Jesse, who likes to masquerade as Geordi LaForge from time to time. “We’re going to write an album of songs over 10 minutes or under 2 minutes long. It’s called 10 and 2. I also want to throw in some dragon lore.”
Stream Jesse’s new album, Nightsong, and Johnny Unicorn’s Thinking Hard To Overcome Nervousness.
Plack, Smith and Unicorn are nothing short of psychedelic, just be sure to eat your mushrooms before you get within wafting distance of the band.
