Athenaeum Jazz at The Studio will continue its concert series with a special one: guitarist Kurt Rosenwinkel's Standards Trio on Friday, Feb. 24.
Joining Rosenwinkel will be double bassist Ugonna Okegwo and drummer Justin Faulkner.
Rosenwinkel emerged into the greater jazz consciousness in the '90s, and has established himself as perhaps the premier jazz guitarist in the post-Metheny, post- Abercrombie vein.
He attended the Berklee College of Music in Boston for two and a half years before leaving to tour with vibraphone master Gary Burton, who happened to be the Dean of the school at the time. Later he found a place in the two-guitar format Electric Bebop Band of drum icon Paul Motian, as well as time spent with tenor saxophonist Joe Henderson and the drummer-led Brian Blade Fellowship.
Rosenwinkel has a unique and instantly identifiable sound, notable for his extremely smooth legato lines that interlace with a sophisticated use of voice-leading and expansive sense of harmony. He uses multiple effects in a subtle and tasteful manner, and also combines a lapel-microphone to blend his vocalizing into his single-note lines for an extremely personalized effect.
"I have been trying to schedule a concert with him for around five years now," says Dan Atkinson, Jazz Program Coordinator for the Athenaeum. "The logistics are tricky given that his home base is now in Berlin. From a musical standpoint, I see him as the guitarist who came up in the company of Brad Mehldau, Joshua Redman, Mark Turner--definitely of that generation and musical axis--which of course, I love !"
As of tonight, there are still tickets available, but I wouldn't delay securing them much longer. Athenaeum Jazz at The Studio is a small venue with excellent acoustics, and will fill up fast.
The Studio is located at 4441 Park Blvd. The concert begins at 8 p.m. Tickets are $21 for Athenaeum members, $26 general admission.
Call (858) 454-5872 to reserve your seats.
