Up-and-coming guitarist Blake Mills took the stage at 8 p.m., playing six tracks supporting his new release, Break Mirrors, and finishing with a Lucinda cover.
Lucinda and Blake emerged a while later for an intimate evening together in support of her new album‚ Blessed. Lucinda’s rough voice filled the Belly Up Quonset hut. Blake’s exciting electric guitar playing gave new life to Lucinda’s songs, “Essence” and “Crescent City” being the highlights.
It was Lucinda’s birthday, and the Belly Up crowd tried but failed on her birthday song. Sean and Sara Watkins of Nickel Creek joined in for much of the show, including a double-barrel gospel encore of “Joy” and “Get Back With God.” Sara’s fiddle and Sean’s bluegrass classical guitar contrasted effectively with Blake’s heavy electric-guitar chops.
Concert: Lucinda Williams
Date: January 26
Venue: Belly Up
Seats: Raised seating (with a few posts in the way)
