The seven-headed beast Doomtree roared through a sold-out Casbah and brought their nuanced, inspirational boom bap along for the ride. Through a setlist consisting largely of No Kings material and a canvas of war drums, P.O.S. and his Midwestern comrades called upon the audience to question the lives they are living and seek more. One walks a fine line when constructing positive rap music in the 21st Century, at least in terms of not sounding corny and trite, but this particular collective has just the right amount of grit and intellectual appeal to pull it off.
Doomtree dove into their catalogue brimming with confidence and tenacity. Fans jostled for position and raised plastic pints to the sky in tune with Lazerbeak and Paper Tiger’s dense production. “The Grand Experiment” and “Gimme the Go” drew massive audience participation, with diehards shouting back every line and bobbing their heads knowingly.
A pair of backstage bettys strategically placed themselves along the conduit between the stage and exit route to Kettner, hoping for a bit of post-show cigarette conversation magic. Doomtree, however, was less interested in the spoils of cult fame and far more focused on conveying the urgency of the now, requiring the crowd to stretch their minds and enjoy themselves in the process.
