Everyone’s favorite mezzo-soprano, Janelle DeStefano, is going to be singing a concert of Samuel Barber songs this Wednesday at the Carmel Valley Public Library.
Janelle is a San Diego native and spent several years with San Diego Opera in the chorus, in the outreach ensemble and on the mainstage.
Her recent San Diego appearances have been in Dido and Aeneas with Bach Collegium San Diego and Bach’s St. Mathews Passion with the La Jolla Symphony.
Other credits include performing the Messiah alto solos with the Los Angeles Master Chorale at the Walt Disney Concert Hall and a series of master classes on the topic of Spanish art songs in Granada, Spain with Teresa Berganza.
The concert of Barber songs is intriguing. We don’t often get a concert of songs by a single composer. In addition to the songs, there will be piano solos by James Frimmer.
Barber is almost the best know American composer but his songs tend to remain in the background, overshadowed by his Violin Concerto and the Adagio for Strings.
The concert begins at 7:00 pm.
