Wobble: New Years Eve with the Plump DJs

Alternative electronic dance night brings in the New Year at Spin Nightclub

Promoter Bryen Beglinger started Wobble Events nearly two years ago as an underground answer to what he saw as uninspired, mainstream nightlife.

“The mainstream is all about being treated like cattle by bouncers herding you in to buy $13 drinks and listen to crappy, outdated house music,” Beglinger told the Reader last July. “There’s something else out there.”

He has since curated a number of out-of-town electronic bass luminaries, many for their first time in San Diego, including MiMOSA, Kraddy, Tipper, Eskmo, Pumpkin, Bird of Prey, Elite Force, Hedflux, Treavor Moontribe, and Krafty Kuts.

It's one hell of a party - beautiful women suspended above the dance floor from aerial silks, hoopers, live art, lights flashing everywhere lending a Q-zar edge to the burlesque circus ambiance - and it's apparent that Wobble's underground, often reaching capacity at the three-story Spin über-plex in Middletown, is among the best destinations in town for those who enjoy dance club chic sans the lackluster pomp of downtown institutions.

“I think it’s inspired some other people to shoot at bigger targets and expand and maybe dream a little bigger for their own events,” Beglinger says, “because now I feel I have a little competition and when I started, I didn’t. We are getting some really solid stuff around here.”

Among the friendly competition, Beglinger cites musician/promoters such as Joe Nader (Elev8) and Michael ‘Divinity’ Mannino (RealEyes), both of whom have taken part in Wobbles past.

On Monday, December 31 at Spin Nightclub (2028 Hancock Street - Middletown) Wobble will be bringing in the New Year with The Plumps DJ, an internationally renowned UK duo (Andy Gardner and Lee Rous), whose unmistakable sound has merited recent remix commissions from the likes of electronic luminaries such as Deadmau5, Mark Ronson, Moby and Orbital.

Expect a dance-friendly mix of electro-house, acid, breakbeat, and techno mashed up into their eponymous “Plump music,” which has brought the duo collaborations with Gary Numan, Jermaine Jackson, and Louise Rhodes along with a ten year residency at Fabric Nightclub and over 1,200 international shows.
