A fellow chorister from San Diego Opera posted a question on the chorus group's wall. She was asking for suggestions for a mix CD of opera highlights she was putting together for her mother-in-law.
There was a tremendous response and I suggested some pieces from the Opera Andrea Chenier by Umberto Giordano. Chenier is a volcano of an opera that doesn't get too much attention.
Opera affectionados know and love it but it did get some popular love once upon a time.
There are two huge tenor arias and a gargantuan duet but the soprano aria La mamma morta was featured in what might be the greatest opera moment in the movies.
The moment was Tom Hanks explaining the aria to Denzel Washington in the movie Philadelphia.
Enjoy it again.
