Live local jazz is going to the dogs on Friday, Dec. 7

Forecast jazz duo playing Humane Society’s annual Holiday Doggie Café concert

"For the eighth year in a row, the Forecast Jazz Duo will be playing jazzed up versions of your favorite holiday songs along with a wide variety of classic jazz and standards from the Great American Songbook," says flutist and sax symbol Greg Pardue of the Humane Society’s annual Holiday Doggie Café fundraiser concert, which happens on Friday, December 7.

"There will be a wonderful array of holiday treats for humans and their dogs, and, yes it’s true, you can bring your dog(s) if they’re well behaved. If you’re a cat lover you should check out the digs at the cat condo."

The annual event is geared for pet owners to have fun socializing with each other. Mainly aimed at dog owners, the Humane Society uses the event to give you practice teaching your dog how to be calm around exciting distractions like people, other dogs, and food.

"Dogs should be friendly and on-leash," says event organizers. "One dog per human handler please. Dogs should be at least four months old and up-to-date on all vaccines, including rabies, to attend."

"Complimentary desserts and dog treats provided. Behavior and training specialists 'on-paw' to answer training questions."

All of the San Diego Humane Society's training is accomplished using modern "dog-friendly" positive reinforcement training techniques - no choke chains or corrections necessary. "Come find out why these gentle, humane methods are the choice of today's most modern and effective dog trainers."

Winter-themed photos will be available for $5. The Forecast jazz duo (Jack Hoffman on piano and Greg Pardue on saxes and flute) will be playing music during the event.

Founded in 1977, Forecast specializes in what regional radio used to call “Lights Out Jazz,” a progressive sort of lounge sound almost verging on rock and roll. Mining the same smooth ground as locals Fattburger and Hollis Gentry’s Neon, and national acts like Spyro Gyra and the Yellowjackets, Forecast revolves around saxes and flutes of bandleader Greg Pardue.

“We play jazz-rock fusion, contemporary smooth jazz, swing, and funk, along with standards from the great American songbook, Brazilian, Latin, and classical jazz,” says Pardue. “Lately, most of our gigs have been for a duo or trio, although sometimes the band is as large as a six-piece. The piano player Max Zape and I have been together over twenty years.”

The instrumental jazz band has received airplay on KIFM San Diego, KSDS San Diego, KSWV Hollywood, KLON Long Beach, and Art Good’s Jazz Trax (a syndicated national radio show). In 2007, Forecast was the only jazz band out of ten nominees for Best Local Band at Signonsandiego.

The group performs as a duo, trio, quartet or quintet, and sometimes as a classic big band consisting of 10 to 20 musicians. They've opened for Charles McPherson, Stanley Clarke, Fattburger, and other national acts. Says Pardue, “When I was in high school, I got to meet Count Basie and Duke Ellington. Needless to say, I was in awe. Over the years, Forecast has opened concerts for Kirk Whalum, Richard Elliot, and War, among others, and we got to hang out with them.”

Pardue also plays with the Will Faeber Band (classic rock), the San Diego Nite Big Band (orchestral jazz with up to twenty members), and PHD Jazz, which he describes as “an offshoot of a jazz improvisation workshop I’ve been in for several years. We can be as small as a trio and as big as a septet.” He has also been actively involved in music education and the music products industry as a district manager and clinician for the Jupiter Band Instrument Company.

The full Forecast lineup includes Greg Pardue (saxes and flute), Max Zape (keyboards), Randy Meyers (drums), Jorge Camberos (guitar), Jack Hoffman (piano), Rick Nash (bass), and Roy Jenkins (bass).

This event will feature the Forecast jazz duo: Jack Hoffman on piano and Greg Pardue on saxes and flute.
