John Williams will be conducting the San Diego Symphony this coming weekend. Yes, it’s that John Williams, the Star Wars, Indiana Jones, Jaws, Close Encounters, Harry Potter, E. T., Schindler’s List, et al John Williams.
The concerts will be on Friday the 7th and Saturday the 8th at Symphony Hall. There is no Sunday concert.
The program will include music from his greatest movie hits as well as his acclaimed cello concerto.
The cello concerto was written in 1993 for Yo-Yo Ma and the Boston Symphony Orchestra. Williams stays true to what has worked for him in the movies. This is most definitely concert music but it has a dramatic tunefulness that is present in the best of Williams’ film scores.
