With all the forth and back we’ve had concerning Tchaikovsky’s 1812 Overture, it is fitting that the San Diego Symphony Summer Pops is concluding with an “1812 Tchaikovsky Spectacular”.
There will be fireworks.
Adding balance to the program is Tchaikovsky’s Rococo Variations. These graceful variations develop a theme that Tchaikovsky wrote in in the Rococo style. His inspiration? Mozart once again.
The Rococo style in music can be considered the late Baroque or the early Classical period. In terms of music it doesn’t have as strong an identity as the Baroque or Classical periods.
The Rococo era is distinguished more for its architecture and interior design than for its music.
Whatever the case, Tchaikovsky’s music is reminiscent of an age which was defined by an air of graciousness in its art and architecture.
It will be interesting to hear the Rococo Variations juxtaposed with the 1812 in a concert.
The final Summer Pops concert is at the Embarcadero on August 31st and September 1st and 2nd.
