I caught a small yet powerful concert this afternoon.
When I arrived at the concert, it wasn’t quite what I was expecting. I was expecting to hear the concert in the Crill Concert Hall at Point Loma Nazarene but the concert was in the Cooper Parlor.
The Cooper Parlor is, I don’t know, about 20 feet by 40 feet? It’s not very big at any rate.
However, the two voices giving the concert were big.
Soprano Megan Vail and mezzo-soprano Karin Michelle Wilcox are preparing themselves for the audition season this December in New York and this concert is part of their preparation. They will be giving the same concert tomorrow up in the L.A. area.
Not only do both these singers possess talent, they appear to have put a significant amount of work in to fulfill their talent.
I have heard Ms. Wilcox at the 2010 and 2011 Metropolitan Opera Auditions and as a member of the SDO chorus. I knew to expect excellence from her.
I had not heard Ms. Vail. I was duly impressed.
The concert had plenty of entertaining music. Some of the arias on the program were Depuis lu jour by Charpantier, Habanera and Seguedilla from Bizet’s Carmen, Puccini’s Che il bel songo, and Rusalka’s Song to the Moon by Dvorak. There was also music by Britten, Mozart, Rossini, Meyerbeer, Johann Strauss, and Carlisle Floyd.
Wilcox and Vail are both young singers in the 20’s but I thought all of these selections were appropriate and represented roles that I think they are capable of singing.
