Against the Current: Ship Records Delivers Debut Compilation

Touting the slogan “Going against the current and shipping music around the world,” non-profit digital/vinyl label Ship Records set sail in March with a collective of local artists, musicians, and promoters at the helm.

The first of the label’s quarterly digital compilations, Against the Current, Volume 1, showcases Ship’s current roster of ten local and out-of-town acts including recent additions Shake Before Us and Gloomsday.

“We went from a full staff of eager people to just three of us with the help of David Robles and Barrio Audio/Video Productions,” says Lety McKenzie, who co-founded Ship Records alongside members of The New Kinetics, Schitzophonics, and musician Spencer Gallop.

The label is now run by McKenzie and Lety & Pat Beers of Schitzophonics.

“The motivation behind Ship Records is helping bands record music and get the word out about them,” McKenzie says. “These bands that we have chosen are following the DIY movement that was paved for us many decades ago. None of this Kickstarter shit.”

McKenzie adds that she doesn't like musicians asking for money to fund their personal projects, calling it “morally incorrect.”

“We all work hard to make a scene work in unity,” she says. “If you don't have the means to get into a recording studio, we will find the means in hopes that when you have succeeded in your recording and pressing, you turn around and pass it forward.”

As such, look for a 7-inch in the next few months from proggy shredders Schitzophonics and a full length in November.

The label provides management, booking, video/audio production, graphic design, and PR/media campaigns, and is interested in bands playing rock n roll, punk, soul, prog rock, metal, and Americana.
