After the End of the World: 2013 San Diego Opera Season

San Diego Opera has released its 2013 season. The operas are:Daughter of the Regiment, Samson and Delilah, Murder in the Cathedral, and Aida.

Samson was last here in 2007 and Aida was in 2008. Daughter of the Regiment was here in 1973 and Murder in the Cathedral is receiving its performances by a professional company in the United States.

Each of these productions has a unique draw we can count on.

Let’s start with Daughter of the Regiment. What can we count on? Tenor Stephen Costello will nail all nine “high C’s” in a mes amis. Mr. Costello has one of the most beautiful and exciting tenor voices San Diego has heard. His singing in Gounod’s Romeo and Juliet was spectacular.

Legendary opera singers Carol Vaness and Ewa Podles will also be in Daughter.

How about Samson and Delilah? Again, the tenor is someone we can count on. Clifton Forbis was San Diego’s Samson in 2007 and he’s back for this one. I liked him so much in ’07 that I traveled to San Francisco in the fall of ’07 to hear him sing the same role in the same production.

Ferruccio Furlanetto will be singing the role of Thomas Becket and Allan Glassman will be Herold in Murder in the Cathedral. For those who know, those two should be enough to get anyone out of the house and down to The Civic Theater come March 30th.

In Aida, the singers in the roles of Aida, Radames, and Amneris are all making their company debut’s. Who isn’t making her company debut? Production designer Zandra Rhodes. Ms. Rhodes has hit homeruns in San Diego with her Magic Flute and Pearl Fishers productions.

As the 2012 season comes to a close, we can look to 2013 with excitement and anticipation.
