Swedish garage-rock group the Hives is in the midst of a four-day Coachella intermission, fitting in a few Southern California shows between the festival’s two weekends. The self-described “punk-rock aristocrats” blew through San Diego on Tuesday, squeezing in some beach and taco time before playing at Belly Up.
At the sold-out Solana Beach gig, their signature black-and-white uniform included "top hats and tails, just like in the wet dream you all dreamt last night,” said guitarist Nicholaus Arson, in a white shirt and black leather jacket.
Tell us more, Nicholaus! What was Coachella Round One like? What might be different about your performance this upcoming weekend?
“Ah, it was the most gorgeous of times. The sky, the people, the Hives. It was perfection when perfection is perfect and repeating perfection is a challenge much in the Hives' taste, so [our] plan for next weekend is to repeat perfection and add water. I hear it's gonna be hot.”
What’d you do in San Diego during your short stay here?
“Oh, we had marvelous food right here at the Belly Up. Very tasty. San Diego is where the Hives roll around in fish tacos ’cause they are THE BEST here. As far as activities, today was all about the beach. Some of us went surfing and others just made the beach a more exciting place to spend your day. That’s about as specific as I can be without having to be called up by people wanting me to sell ’em the rights to the story.”
You're leaving the States soon and taking your tour to Europe. Be honest, California versus Sweden: who parties harder and throws better festivals?
“Well, your festival sites are fuckin’ amazing with grass lawns that would make people in heaven cry, and you scream and clap for the Hives, which is really all we ask for. People in Sweden probably party a lot harder at festivals, but I'm not sure that's the route California wants to go. Festival partying in Sweden is more like drinking two bottles of vodka while crawling through a Navy SEAL practice course. If that sounds like fun to you, let me know, and I'll teach you all about it...”
The Hives' fifth full-length album, Lex Hives, will hit the U.S. in June.
