Some concerts for this weekend:
Saturday night the Canterbury Cathedral Choir is performing at Mission Valley United Methodist as part of their 2012 North American Tour. The concert is at 7:00 pm. The choir is composed of 18 boy choristers and 12 lay clerics. The choir rarely tours because of their daily commitments at the cathedral. The Canterbury Cathedral has an ancient tradition dating back to its founding in 597 AD by St. Augustine.
Sunday is overflowing with concerts.
There are piano concerts at Point Loma Public Library, Escondido Center for the Arts, and Scripps Miramar Ranch Public Library.
There is chamber music at the Encinitas Public Library and St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church in Encinitas.
The Virginia Hawk Memorial Vocal Recital and Reception is at the Ronald Reagan Center in El Cajon. The Virginia Hawk is a scholarship competition for singers aged between 20 and 35. The competition was in March. Sunday is a recital given by select participants.
The big kid on the block Sunday is the Emerson String Quartet at UCSD. The Emerson String Quartet has won nine Grammy’s and records on the prestigious Deutsche Grammophon label. Emerson was founded in 1976 and have had unrivaled success ever since. They are the only string quartet to win the Grammy for best classical album twice. Their program on Sunday comes from the heart of the classical repertoire with quartets by Mozart, Haydn, and Beethoven. The Concert is in the Conrad Prebys Music Center on the UCSD campus at 8:00 pm.
