This coming weekend is overflowing with classical music.
Friday night sees the start of San Diego Symphony's 2011-2012 season with "Thibaudet Plays Ravel". Jean Yves Thibaudet is a world class pianist and will be performing two piano concertos by Ravel.
At USD on Friday night, Trio Licenza presents a concert of music by Felix Mendelssohn.
If one so chose, Saturday could be a 12-hour marathon of music.
The San Diego Metropolitan Opera Auditions start at 10:00 am in Crill Auditorium on the Point Loma Nazarene campus. While this is called an audition, it's actually a competition. The public is welcome.
This is one of my favorite events of the year. Young singers get up there and show us what they have — or in some instances, what they still need to get. Depending on the number of entrants, this event will go until late afternoon or early evening.
After grabbing a quick dinner, there are several options for Saturday night.
Downtown is the 2011 Opus Gala Concert at Symphony Hall with Thibaudet and singer Kathleen Battle.
It's interesting to see Kathleen Battle on the ticket. She was a dominant figure during the 1980s and '90s and her diva antics are legendary.
At the Athenaeum in La Jolla, pianist Inon Barnatan opens the Karatz Chamber Concert Series.
There is also a concert of chamber music at Grossmont College featuring trio works by Bach, Mozart, Schumann, Hovhannes, Rachmaninov, and Vaughan Williams.
There are seven concerts on Sunday which is too many for me to handle here. For a list of these concerts, visit the Reader Events section.
