In this weird, wild future, you can often listen to an album online as many times as you want before you buy it on vinyl or for download.
As such, here are a few recent local releases what for pleasing your ear holes.
Joel Williams (aka KYNAN), younger brother of Nate Williams (aka Wavves), is a member of D/Wolves and DUDES.
This solo project finds a remarkable mash-up of beats, samples (is that "Burning Down the House"?), trumpet, and emotive vocals that will delight fans of Radiohead, Yoshimi-era Flaming Lips, Mouse on Mars, and Boards of Canada.
Recently publicly announced to be Crocodiles' Charles Rowell and the Slits' Hollie Cook (daughter of Sex Pistols drummer Paul Cook), Psychic Dancehall’s lo-fi darkwave Art Fag release will sit well with listeners of Thomas Dolby, Joy Division, Nick Cave, My Bloody Valentine, and Dum Dum Girls.
“A Love That Kills” is the album’s single, but the haunting, upbeat “Out of the Vale, Into the Void” is the real gem.
Psychic Dancehall - Dreamers LP
EshOne, the administrator of sddubstep.com gone elkbeats.com and the guy behind the Dead Technology all vinyl/acetate dubplate nights, recently moved to Albuquerque, New Mexico.
From the sounds of this new release, he’s staying true to his rootsy, dark, and minimalist spin on dubstep.
EshOne – Slurpee Sessions Volume Two
Poppy chilly-wavey duo TV Girl blew up last year when, within a week of posting the track online, “If You Want It” had garnered attention from Pitchfork, the UK's Guardian, and a BBC podcast.
The song sampled Todd Rundgren’s 1973 hit “Hello It’s Me” in a 'verby jam that Pitchfork called “balmy and inviting, despite its narrative about a drunken love interest's sloppy evening.”
Now, the track is all but obsolete after Rhino Entertainment, a subsidiary of Warner Music Group, issued notices to websites to remove the song in June.
On October 4, TV Girl will release a new 7” single — which has accrued worshipful ballyhoo from the likes of Pitchfork, Stereogum, and The Guardian — in a limited run of 500 copies on Small Plates.
