Groovetube - Adams Avenue Street Fair 2011

The 30th annual Adams Avenue Street Fair this past weekend covered 7 Normal Heights blocks with over 300 vendors, 6 stages, and 70-plus music acts including headliners El Vez, Dengue Fever, El Chicano, and The Beat Farmers.

I stopped in on Saturday to join the sunny crowds at the Karl Strauss beer garden and weave my way through vendors of bratwurst, new age jewelry, water subscriptions, and feather hair extensions.

A Scribe Amidst the Lions evoked ecstatic dance from the 33rd Street Rock Stage with their eclectic Jeremy Enigk meets Thom Yorke proggy jams.

Monday nights got way less awesome when the Styletones gave up their weekly residency at Bar Pink several months ago in favor of selective performances. As you can see, they are still the instant dance party they’ve always been. Find front man Steve Harris in the dictionary under “pure mojo.”

I was quickly smitten by The Earthlings, who were covering Beck’s “Strange Invitation” when I wandered across their set at the Demille’s Variety Stage. Clearly out of this world, the four-piece touts two of the sexiest things on this good Earth: a stand-up bass and a female vocalist in 1930s garb. Do take a look.

I’ve got a lot of appreciation for talented buskers who can entertain and command the attention of complete strangers in the hopes of lunch money, and this New York percussion duo did it with vigor and moxie.
