Things for Doing: Three Electronic Options

Thursdays are the new Wednesday, so here are three local electronic music nights to facilitate your groove.

The weekly Kitchen Sink night at the newly renovated Air Conditioned Lounge moves hips with old-meets-new school synth-funk, boogie, house, rare and nu-disco, electro, and indie dance jams.

Tonight’s installement features local Danny Massure, whose podcast and labels Spring Strut and Ticklejunk have garnered him international acclaim.

When not remixing funk, midtempo breaks, and downtempo producers, Massure is enlisting studio musicians to create unique samples for his funk, soul, jazz, Afrobeat, Latin, and Jamaican grooves.

Resident DJ Lvee will also be on deck.

Stella Artois and whiskey cocktails are $4 all night and all cocktails are $2 off for a late night happy hour running midnight to close.

Free.

On the darker, more ethereal tip, check out the bourgeoning 170SD monthly at Kava Lounge.

The genre experiments with the parameters of 170-beat-per-minute music by taking the focus away from breakbeats and incorporating elements of ambient, hip-hop, electro, IDM, dub reggae, and drum-and-bass.

“As for its history in San Diego, there hasn’t been anyone dedicated to this style,” DJ Will Guise told the Reader in June.

“To tell you the truth, we are the only experimental night I’ve seen in this country doing this right now.

Tonight’s line-up includes Orange County DJ Nic TVG, local Jason, and residents Calculon and Will Guise.

$5

I'm looking forward to tonight's quasi-annual (that’s every few months) Zzzz : Sound of Quiet Punx night at Whistle Stop.

The series focuses on San Diego’s more ambient side and artists such as Bjork, Nick Drake, Seefeel, Sigur Ros, Ulrich Schnauss, and Aphex Twin.

Local beat and sound collage wizards Illuminauts (nominated for Best Electronic in the 2011 San Diego Music Awards) will be headlining.

Entry is free, but attendance is mandatory.
