Red Pony Clock CD Release Sept. 24 @ Tin Can Ale House

A release party for Red Pony Clock's new full-length Whatevz Forevzzz, including a brown vinyl edition, happens September 24 at the Tin Can Ale House.

There will be a 6 foot party burrito on hand to stave off the munchies, as well as performances from D/Wolves, Foreign Film, and Doves and Desperados.

Founded by Gabe Saucedo and at times featuring upwards of 13 members, Red Pony Clock has opened shows for Architecture in Helsinki, Of Montreal, Apples in Stereo, Elf Power, Mt Erie, Persephones Bees, and others.

The group’s music is experimental, mellow, ‘60s-influenced pop/folk rock, with heavy horns and decidedly tropical salsa-inspired undercurrents. Band members at various times have included Gabe Saucedo, Gerry Saucedo, Melina Saucedo, Tony Prudhome, Porsche Griggs, Martin Tapia, Adam Powell, Mike Lopez, Normandie Wilson, David Barclay, David Menchaca, Chris Marino, Samantha Abraham, Anthea Osguthorpe, and Lauren Plumlee.

At first listen, the density of the band's music can be overwhelming, even confounding. But take heart. While most twelve-headed monsters are intent on luring you under your bed only to inflict unspeakable acts of torture, Red Pony Clock would rather help you build a pillow fort in which to chill out and have a sing-along. Or better yet, a jamboree!

Over the course of eight years, they've gone from being Gabe Saucedo's one-man lo-fi recording project to the incalculable, cult-like assemblage of today, sporadically releasing their music on 7" records, cassettes, vinyl, and hand-decorated CDRs. Their 2007 full-length God Made Dirt (HHBTM records) marked RPC's first foray into a professional studio, recorded with the help of their old friend, Roy Silverstein at Habitat Studios.

"The title of the new album, Whatevz Forevzzz, pretty much describes our music," singer/guitarist Gabe Saucedo tells the Reader.

Singer Samantha Abraham goes a bit further with her own POV. "Mariachi influenced indie rock, if the Beach Boys played live with all the instruments on the recordings."

Bassist/singer Gerry Saucedo begs to differ. "I dunno. I often hear the whole Beatles, Beach Boys, mariachi, tropicalia, and ska comparisons, but there's obviously more to it than that."

Normandie Wilson (marimba, piano, vocals): "It has to be seen to be believed. Mariachi indie pop, with killer comedy in between."

Dave Menchaca (drums): "Very not-sexy mariachi porn."

And Melina Saucedo: "Os Mutantes meets Harper's Bazaar."

The Whatevz Forevzzz release party happens Saturday, September 24, at the Tin Can Alehouse, 1863 5th Avenue.

Red Pony Clock will spend October on a national U.S. tour.
