Launched just over a year ago from its offices in San Diego, Bandsintown has become one of the most-used Facebook applications for live music fans and artists. Facebook currently ranks it among the top five music apps utilized by monthly average users, along with similar apps like Root Music, ReverbNation, Pandora, and Vevo.
The company's free iPhone app creates a personalized list of concerts in the user's area using GPS and your iTunes listening history.
"BIT provides a personalized way for music fans to track their favorite artists so they never miss a live concert and to discover new touring artists, based on their musical preferences and location," according to the company website. For artists, Bandsintown provides a best-in-class platform that allows artists to promote their live concerts and to sell tickets, leveraging from Facebook, Twitter, MySpace, and plugins for other social media sites.
Bandsintown also helps fans discover new touring artists, based on their musical preferences and location. The concert API is used by companies like Shazam, eMusic, Soundhound, Root Music, ReverbNation, and all four majors labels, as well as numerous independents.
On September 15, mobile and social application publisher Cellfish announced its acquisition of Bandsintown for an undisclosed amount. Cellfish operates over a hundred mobile and social properties, distributed through its own distribution network as well as through partnerships with around 125 operators, media, and brands worldwide.
"Cellfish shares our passion for music and vision, and their resources and market-leading expertise will help us continue to grow Bandsintown," said Todd Cronin, Founder and CEO of Bandsintown.
"My co-founder Phil Sergi and I, along with our entire staff in San Diego, are looking forward to aggressively expanding Bandsintown and the capabilities of the platform to better serve artists and thrill music fans."
