This weekend is a little thinner than last for classical music.
However, The La Jolla Symphony is opening its season of Stravinsky. It's a novel idea and I like it. There will be several concerts throughout the season that feature a different aspect of Stravinsky's output.
The first concert is Stravinsky the French Composer. Debussy and Ravel are also included on the program but the meat and potatoes is Stravinsky's Rite of Spring which was premiered in Paris. Hence the French designation.
Performances are in Mandeville Auditorium at 7:30 pm and Sunday at 2:00 pm.
Also of interest this weekend:
Hungarian pianist Peter Toth plays at Scripps Ranch Library on Saturday at 7:00 pm.
Palomar/Pacific Concert band is performing Mussorgsky and Ravel with the help of the Palomar Dance Team. Saturday at 7:00 pm and Sunday at 2:00 pm.
The SDSU Wind Symphony is performing a concert on Sunday at 4:00 pm. Composers include Grainger, Wagner, and Vaughan Williams.
Saturday morning at 9:55, the Metropolitan Opera HD telecast will be in local movie theaters. The opera this week is Don Giovanni.
