All-Star Mighty Joe Longa Benefit Oct. 28 @ Tio Leo's

After months of chemotherapy, ace keyboardist Mighty Joe Longa of Joey Harris and the Mentals has been "catching up on a lot of sleep." The Mentals have been playing around town with a little help from friends like Mojo Nixon and Scottie Blinn.

An all-star benefit concert happens on Friday, October 28, at Tio Leo's on Napa Street in Bay Park.

Says Joey Harris, "Nine Headliners at 8pm for 10 bucks, and it's all happening for the benefit of Mental Number One, Mighty Joe Longa. Come down for the night, or drop in for your favorite band. We're gonna have a contest for Best Mighty Joe Costume."

Schedule:

8 - 8:40 Modern Rhythm - famed DJ Jim McInnes - Jack Pinney & band

8:50 - 9:30 Private Domain - Jack Butler - Paul Shafer & band

9:40 - 10:20 Blue Dawg Blues Band - Vick Gross & band

10:30 - 11:10 The Farmers - Jerry Raney - Chris Sullivan & band

11:20 - 12:00 Black Market Baby - Scottie Maddog Blinn & band

12:10 - 12:50 The Mentals - Joey - Jef - Josh & Mojo Nixon

According to Harris, "Chet Cannon and Tomcat Courtney will sit in with whichever of these fine groups they happen to choose!"

You can also contribute to the Help Mighty Joe Beat The Shit Out Of Cancer Fund by sending donations to: Joey - 8697 La Mesa Blvd. ste.C #127 - La Mesa, Ca 91941.

Mighty Joe and his wife Jeanne Longa sent this update, both as a thank you to well-wishers and a progress report on his fight against cancer.

“We want to thank all of you for your continued support! Your positive thoughts, energy, prayers, and most of all love. We have been having a hard time, but we will get through this illness and come out with a greater understanding of life.”

“Special thanks to...all the people who attended and donated money, love, music, and support. All the people at Sharp Coronado Hospital. We couldn’t have gotten this far without all of you! Plus, all our doctors at Sharp Memorial. We know you’re not getting paid enough and working out of the goodness of your hearts.”

The cancer seems to be a little more extensive than first thought, and Mighty Joe now has five doctors instead of two. “Our Team, and man do we appreciate them, have been great! We told them they can do just about anything they want EXCEPT for messing with the fingers.”

Regarding queries as to whether Mighty Joe has kept his iconic ponytail, “A few of you have cared enough to ask us. Well, so far, his hair is flowing freely!”

“We hope this letter reaches everyone who has been supporting us. We welcome all positive energy! NO CRY BABYS! We will get through this and the music will continue.”

“It’s going to be a long hard road. But they don’t call Joe ‘Mighty’ for nothing! See you all soon.”

Love, Mighty Joe and Jeanne Longa
