The cans were cracked, and after the steep $15 cover and being mildly entertained by the opening two bands of the night — mainstream scream-punk blah that most missed — Wooly Mammoth surprised with rapid chord changes and wild, ranting verses (Meatmenesque).
The fourth act, Mr. Pascal Briggs, stood alone with his guitar and reminisced of lost loves and the want/wont of youth (a la Morrissey/Dylan) with an eclectic mix of punk, thrash, folk, and rock.
The headliners then gave the crowd exactly what we live for in a punk-rock world, as the original hell-on-wheels, pool-skate shark Duane Peters and his U.S. Bombs opened with "Tora, Tora, Tora," the first track off of punk classic Back to the Laundromat. We all felt like we got a good tumble cycle watching the magic.
The crowd continued pogoing, skanking, and dancing loose to Bombs' head-bopping, chorus-chanting blasts "In the Country" and "Jacks," in which Peters claims he lives "45 m.p.h....downhill...on a skate!"
The set and encore were an orgy of flesh, sound, and sweat that'd make you remember exactly when you first got into punk rock all those years ago and why it's still worth breaking your own bones over.
Concert: U.S. Bombs, Pascal Briggs, Wooly Mammoth Date: August 27 Venue: Til-Two Seats: Nope
