SUBversive Bass Collective Hosts Frite Nite's Comma

“SUBversive is a musical collective of bass music DJs and producers, whose goal is to throw epic, sweaty, dance-music parties,” writes electronic musician and promoter Saif Bari.

“Originally, SUBversive started out in 2009 as an impromptu, renegade dance party thrown by four friends (founding members: Jared "indaskyes" Lindo, Harold "Facemelter" Cabalic, Mike "Wicked Styles" Toillion, and Jon "Traxmyth" Engquist) on the campus of UC San Diego. While developing their skills at DJing and production, the boys of SUBversive decided to throw another one of these parties the following year. The party was received as a success, which encouraged SUBversive to try and organize more shows, with bigger headliners, at well-known venues. While SUBversive started out as a San Diego idea, and while the crew continues to throw parties there, the crew is mostly located in the San Francisco Bay Area."

“2011 has been very good to SUBversive,” continues Saif “Mastah Syphe” Bari, who was added to SUBversive’s roster this year.

“We have organized shows with prominent bass music artists NastyNasty, SALVA, Low Limit, Sugarpill, and Comma, with more shows to come by year's end. Next year plans to be even bigger, with more events, as well as planned SUBversive EPs and mixes from the resident artists.”

Tonight, SUBversive will take over the Kava Lounge to feature sets from San Francisco beat hopper Comma (of the renowned Frite Nite label), local heavy-hitters Misk (Elk Beats) and Osal8 (Elev8), and SUBversive resident DJs.

“Frite Nite is an independent music label and a group of very well respected musicians in the bass music community,” Bari writes, “so to have any of them come and play a show with us is an honor. They have a roster of very forward thinking artists, and a number of releases (mixes, compilations, etc.) under their belt, the most recent being Surreal Estate. Not too many independent, bass-music artists make their way down to San Diego, instead opting for LA, so by throwing these parties with them, hopefully we are doing something that will catch people's attention as fun and fresh. “
