Bangles Bang 'Em Out at House of Blues

The Bangles may have been around 30 years, but there was a buoyant energy about them when they performed at the House of Blues.

On tour to promote Sweetheart of the Sun, the three-female band, with help from a bassist and keyboard player, opened with new songs, the shimmering "Anna Lee" and then the aggressive, high-powered blast "Ball N Chain." The audience then settled in to enjoy the Bangles’ beloved ’80s hits, such as "In Your Room," "Manic Monday," and the Jules Shear-penned "If She Knew What She Wants," which was played with a slight country-western feel. The Beatle-esque ballad "Liverpool" was sultry, and the crowd swooned over the lovely "Eternal Flame."

The Bangles lilting feminine melodies and folk-rock harmonies make for some entertaining tunes, and the band mixed it up at the end with the encore of a hit song they said they "almost forget to play,” “Walk Like an Egyptian." But they remixed the song by inserting the Who's "Magic Bus," for a trippy end of the evening.
