Action Andy's New All-Star Band Debuts June 18 at Eleven

On June 18, a new local “supergroup” of sorts, Action Andy and the Hightones will debut at Eleven.

Comprised of frontman Andy Rasmussen (The Bomboras, The Sleepwalkers), bassist Tom Ward (Nashville Ramblers, Gravedigger V), guitarist Xavier Anaya (The Trebels, The Hoods)and drummer Skid Roper (Mojo Nixon, The Evasions), what might have been a studio only combo took a turn when Rasmussen was asked to perform at his brother-in-laws wedding, creating a need for this warm up show.

The group perform a semi-acoustic mix of honky tonk country, fifties vintage rock ‘n’ roll, and blues, with Roper on cocktail drums with brushes. “I don’t have a roadmap in my head where the music is going,” he remarked. “People have said before that my songs sound like old black and white movies,” Rasmussen remarked. “I hope to maintain some of that old time charm.”

Recording is underway on an album, High & Lonesome, at Earthling Studios. “It'll have all original music, with a story line to thread between the songs -I won't say 'concept album' at this point, but it'll certainly link together.”

Rasmussen notes he’s making the music for release on vinyl, with no CD’s planned, though he is open to other formats. “I'm just trying to figure out if there's still a CD market out there. I hear the cassette is making a comeback. Seriously. So I'm open to everything at this point. 78rpm anyone?”

Opening will be a variation of Ward’s regular group, The Fairmounts, in this case The Fair Amounts.

(Thanks to Bart Mendoza for the tip!)

Action Andy Rasmussen has played with the Loons, Sleepwalkers, and Haunted Honky Tonkers, who were later renamed The Return of Action Andy.

“I do not seek an audience, I do not seek fans, nor any notoriety,” says Action Andy. “This soul of mine leads me to a place where I can pick up, put down, drink up, and settle it all in song. If I can make music with friends, I know my life will be well spent.”

The group’s 2008 album High Lonesome (not to be confused with the upcoming Hightones album High AND Lonesome) includes Buzz Campbell (Hot Rod Lincoln) Xavier Anaya (Trebels), Hector Penalosa (the Zeros), Maren Parusel (Wild Weekend), Bobby Sanchez, Gig Fortier, and others. The album was released on both vinyl and CD, with a 7” vinyl release on French Label Hog-Maw. The song “Boy Crazy Gal” received spins on BBC Liverpool.
