The Pagans: Hector, Alexander the Great, and Julius Caesar.
The Hebrews: Joshua, King David, Judas Maccabeus.
The Christians: King Arthur, Charlemagne, Godfrey of Bouillin.
Three groups of three is significant in music as well. 9/8 time is know as perfect time. Three was a special number because of The Holy Trinity. Three groups of three is perfection.

Handel wrote operas about Alexander and Caeser and a popular oratorio on Judas Maccabeus. The opera about Alexander is rarely performed.
Purcell wrote an early opera on Arthur.
Honegger wrote an oratorio Le Roi David.
