Jazz Choices For The Extended Weekend

Friday, July 1, brings an unusual amount of choices for the jazz lover. Those lucky enough to have planned ahead can attend the sold-out Anat Cohen Quartet show at the Athenaeum Music and Arts Library in La Jolla; tickets are still available for the Gilbert Castellanos group at Dizzy's and those seeking a more R&B flavored approach can catch vocalist Rachelle Ferrell at Anthology in Little Italy.

On Saturday July 2 ,at 8 p.m. Dizzy's carries on with virtuosic pianist Mikan Zlatcovich fronting a trio featuring Rob Thorsen and Russell Bizzett on bass and drums.

Sunday, July 3, Dizzy's is hosting an early Independence Day celebration, from 3 - 6 p.m. For a mere $5, you can revel in the traditional New Orleans second-line street grooves of the Euphoria Brass Band, (2 sets), an extra $5 snags you a plate of BBQ, and for another $5 you can whet your whistle with an ice-cold beer or a glass of wine. Bring the family !

July 4th, head north for the City of Vista's 43rd Annual Red, White and Boom celebration, at the Moonlight Amphitheater.

Musical entertainment begins at 5p.m. with the Peter Sprague Group ( Peter-guitar, Tripp Sprague -reeds, Kevyn Lettau-vocals, Gunnar Biggs-bass and Duncan Moore-drums).

The Fabulous Ultratones take over at 7:30, rocking out till the fireworks begin at 9 p.m.

The park actually opens at 7 a.m.-- food and beverages will be on sale in the Amphitheater after 1 pm.

The event is free to the public, but parking is $10 at the event. You can park and take a shuttle at no charge from Vista High School, One Panther Way, Vista.
